How do we evaluate automated music summarization systems?

WHAT IS A THEME?
  • passage that is "characteristic" of some work

  • Operational Definition 1: segment of work that is most easily recognized

  • Operational Definition 2: segment of work that is most easily recalled

PROTOTYPE THEORY:
  • What is a prototypic bird?

    goldfinch, sparrow, blue jay, cardinal, eagle, pigeon
  • Was penguin on the list? Was robin on the list?

  • Asymmetrical similarity: pink is more like red (the prototype) than red is like pink

  • Are musical themes prototypical?
    YES: variations are rated more similar to themes than are themes to variations.
